We carried on along the Avenue of the Giants, a road originally built for the stagecoaches of the 1880s, with towering redwoods on either side, before stopping at Eureka, a town with a curious mixture of down-at-heel motels, gaudy Victorian houses and some fabulous antique shops. From there, it was a short drive to the Redwood National Park.
